I recently returned from Oporto where I met some truly fantastic nurses. These nurses were so committed and dedicated to their profession so it really shocked me to learn that nurses in Portugal are working in excess of 50 hours a week just to get by. This was truly shocking to me. As a nurse I know how tough the demands of the job can be. That is why it is so important to get the correct work life balance. Working such long hours in a high pressure job like nursing can only lead to a de-motivated and burnt out work force. All the nurses I met truly loved their jobs but did echo the above sentiments. In order to get that work life balance back, they have taken the step to broaden their nursing horizons and have looked towards Ireland, the UK and the Channel Islands to advance their careers. There are some truly fantastic opportunities for nurses in these countries in the acute hospital services and care of the older adults, both in the public and private sector.
